Born in Philadelphia in 1892, Stuart Davis’ painting career shifted significantly as the artist was exposed to various art movements, both in the United States and in Europe. These changes evolved slowly, and Davis’ work remained assured and relevant throughout his artistic development.
Originally a magazine illustrator, Davis seriously turned to painting after viewing the Armory Show of 1913. Composers of Musical Comedies, circa 1920, is an early example of his development from illustration to the urban environments suffused with jazz that he became best known for. This playful composition is rhythmic and lyrical, vividly evoking the comedic and melodious subject with quick, improvisational and facile lines – the essence of jazz development.
